RYAZAN HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL MUSEUM

Also one of Russia’s oldest museums and founded in 1884, the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve’s first exhibition was the icon of martyrs Sts. Florus and Laurus, which a military officer donated as a gift.
The museum formally opened to the public in 1890, after having located an official site.
A new era in the museum started after 1918, after local authorities merged several museums into one as the Provincial History and Art Museum. Private donations from noble families, churches and monasteries saw its collection quickly increase.
The museum received in 1922 the Oleg Palace, a new and spacious location at the Ryazan Kremlin, where civil and church architecture dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries were.
In 1968, the local regional museum and the architectural monuments that housed valuable historical, architectural and artistic objects officially became the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve.
The museum includes 13 of the Ryazan Kremlin’s monuments and the kremlin territory, which consists of the Old Ryazan hill fort historic archaeological complex as well as the site of the Battle of the Vozha River.
That battle between the Grand Duchy of Moscow and the Golden Horde occurred in the 14th century.
